Barcelona will have a public cemetery for pets in 2024.

Cremation and burial will be facilitated with emotional support for families.

Barcelona takes a step forward in inclusion: it will be the first city in Spain to have a cemetery for pets.

After a study carried out by Cementiris de Barcelona, it has been verified that half of the families in Barcelona live with a pet. With this data, they conclude that there is an unmet demand to give them a dignified farewell: it is estimated that about 7,000 services will be performed annually.

The consistory has shared that the service will be provided within an “emotional model” that will shelter the families since the death of the animal to its cremation or burial. The humans responsibles for each animal may decide to keep the ashes or dispose of them in one of the spaces provided for this purpose, which will be located in specific areas in the cemeteries of Collserola or Montjuïc.

The cost of this service will be 200 €, emerging as an alternative to private services that have been the only possible way so far to give the last farewell to our animal companions.
